Jiu Zhai Gou

For many photographers, Jiuzhaigou is synonymous with autumn. The appeal is obvious. Hillsides ignite in shades of gold and crimson, while the lakes retain their luminous turquoise waters, creating one of China's most celebrated seasonal landscapes.

Yet autumn also brings the crowds. As one of the country's most sought-after destinations, Jiuzhaigou attracts vast numbers of visitors eager to experience its fleeting colours. The valleys, boardwalks, and viewpoints become filled with people, making solitude increasingly rare.

I chose a different season.

Winter reveals another side of Jiuzhaigou — quieter, calmer, and perhaps more intimate. The crowds disappear, leaving behind a landscape transformed by cold and silence. Waterfalls freeze into delicate curtains of blue ice, ancient forests stand bare beneath the mountains, and the mineral-rich lakes retain their extraordinary clarity through the winter air.

Stripped of the spectacle of autumn, the landscape becomes something simpler and more enduring: a study of light, colour, texture, and form.
