Wu Chuan

Wuchuan City is located in the southwest of Guangdong Province, where there is a long coastline of about 70 kilometres. The coastal economy of Wuchuan is mostly based on fishing.

What is interesting is that some fishermen still use very traditional fishing methods. First, they let their boats go out to sea with their nets. Then, after making a circle, they bring the other end of the net back to shore and tie it to a modified mud shovel, before slowly collecting the net.

I was fortunate enough to visit Wuchuan in 2008 and was led by a local to a small village to photograph this traditional method of fishing. On the way, I also tasted various kinds of seafood. As far as freshness is concerned, you cannot get any fresher than near the sea.
