The Migration
March 2020
After more than two decades, I finally moved the website to a new server and said goodbye to the old design. The previous site was built with HTML and simple CSS. It was almost entirely static, with very little animation.
During the pandemic, I taught myself several pieces of web-building software. Once I understood the tools, I decided to redesign the site myself. With modern software, I was able to rebuild it from scratch. It was challenging at times, but I enjoyed the process.
Building a website today is very different from the old days. It reminds me a little of the difference between film and digital photography. In the past, there was no instant preview. Until you opened the page in a browser, all you had were lines of code in a text editor. Now, a site can be assembled visually, sometimes without writing a single line of code. That is how much the technology has changed.
“I rebuilt the site from scratch.”
It took about a month to learn the software, redesign the site and upload it to the new host. The migration was enjoyable, though not always easy, especially when I had to deal with the technical side of the hosting. But I made it through.
Now the new website is here. I hope you enjoy it.
